L’histoire commence de manière classique : quatre potes sur les bancs d’un lycée au milieu des années 90 se retrouvent autour d’une passion commune pour le rock, et notamment les Smashing Pumpkins qui font l’unanimité au sein du groupe. De Billy Corgan et ses citrouilles, Lionnel, Seb, Tom B. et Tom F. admirent avant tout la capacité à tresser les pathologies contradictoires : délicatesse neurasthénique et fureur hystériques en cohabitation permanente, comme sur ce morceau de Siamese Dreams intitulé… "Soma".

Après plus de dix ans à écumer les scènes de France et d’ailleurs (merci l’anglais), Soma passe la vitesse supérieure en 2009 et sort enfin un EP éponyme le 5 octobre qui sera suivi de leur premier album en Mars 2010.

Incapable de trancher entre l’évidence des mélodies pop et l’agression salvatrice du rock, cet EP est à l’image de ses créateurs : Il oscille constamment entre ces deux tendances, qui ne sont jamais aussi fortes que lorsqu’elles se télescopent lors d’heureuses collisions. Comme le tubesque "Get Down" qui ouvre l’album sur ce qui ressemble à l’improbable combinaison d’un riff des Hives et des envolées pop discoïdes des Killers.

Ils réaliseront ensuite un rêve en faisant mixer leurs titres à Los Angeles par une de leurs idoles, Dave Sardy, qui a notamment produit Oasis, Cold War Kids, Jet ou les Dandy Warhols. Soma devenant le premier groupe français avec lequel l’Américain acceptera de travailler.









The story began quite unremarkably: four friends at secondary school in the mid-90s were united by a shared love of rock, especially the Smashing Pumpkins, a band they could all agree on. Lionnel, Seb, Tom B. and Tom F. mainly admired the gift Billy Corgan’s group had for knitting together competing disorders: neurasthenic delicacy and hysterical fury in constant contact, as on a track from Siamese Dreams entitled… "Soma".

After more than ten years touring venues in France and elsewhere (English lyrics aiding), Soma shifted up a gear in 2009, finally recording an eponymous EP for release on the 5th October, to be followed by their first album on the 18th March 2010.

Unable to choose between the obvious charms of pop melodies and the blessed ferocity of rock, the EP mirrors its authors, constantly oscillating between the two genres which reach an incomparable peak when they providentially clash, as on the compelling "Get Down", which opens the album with what sounds like an improbable combination of a Hives riff and disco-flavoured flights of fancy from the Killers.

Finally, their dream came true when their tracks were mixed in Los Angeles by one of their idols, Dave Sardy, producer of Oasis, Cold War Kids, Jet and the Dandy Warhols. Soma are the first French group the American has agreed to work with.
